PhD and PostDoc positions in Machine Learning for Natural Language Processing, Saarland University, Germany

Applications are invited for PhD and Postdoctoral positions in Machine Learning for Natural Language Processing at the newly established research group headed by Dr. Ivan Titov. The research will be focused on developing new machine learning methods for structure processing minimizing feature engineering, exploiting available abundant but indirect supervision and as well as on studying methods for inducing and integrating various types of prior knowledge.

Saarland University is a European leader in Computer Science research and teaching, and is especially renowned for its research in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. The newly established group is a part of the interdisciplinary MMCI Cluster of Excellence formed in partnership with top-ranked research institutions located on the Saarland University campus: Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Researchers come from all over the world and the research language is English.

The ideal candidate for the PhD position should have a masters degree in computer science, mathematics or a related field with a strong background in mathematics, statistics and algorithms. A strong academic record, excellent analytical skills and a clear aptitude for autonomous, creative research will be priority selection criteria. Background in machine learning and computational linguistics is desirable but not required.

A candidate for the PostDoc position should have (or be about to finish) a PhD in machine learning, computational linguistics or a related discipline, as well as an excellent publication record. Experience with machine learning and probabilistic modeling is essential.

Candidates for both PostDoc and PhD positions should have strong programming skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

The salary and social benefits are according to Germany's public sector TVL E13 scale, approximately 4,000 Euro per month (before taxes), depending on qualifications and professional experience. PhD researchers will be employed part-time, and will have the opportunity of pursuing a doctoral degree at Saarland University.

PhD position available

A 3-year PhD position is available for a computational study on macroscopic modeling of the complex activity states in cerebral cortex, based on in vivo imaging data. The project will consist of conceiving macroscopic models of neuronal networks (in A. Destexhe lab) to be used in conjunction with voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging in primary visual cortex (in Y. Fregnac lab, as well as D. Contreras, U Penn). One of the goals of the study will be to capture the complex activity patterns seen experimentally and extract functional correlations. A participation to the experiments is possible as a function of the interest of the candidate.

The candidate can be from biology, computational or physics/math background. A prior experience in computational neuroscience or computational biology courses is preferred.

The position is funded by a EU training network (FACETS-ITN) and there is a restriction on nationality: the candidate can be of any nationality except French, and they must not have been resident in France for more than one year in the last 3 years.

The CNRS campus of Gif-sur-Yvette is entirely devoted to research and situated in the vicinity of Paris. The UNIC consists of an integrated and interactive environment comprising in vivo electrophysiology (Y. Fregnac, D. Shulz), in vitro electrophysiology (T. Bal, K. Grant), comparative anatomy (J-P. PhD in "Integration of traffic awareness in substitution networks"

Scientific context: A fleet of mobile routers could be used to deploy a substitution network in order to help an already existing network (called base network hereafter) that is faced to difficulties (like, for instance, an equipment failure, a power failure, or a high traffic increase).
Due to its autonomous mobile components and to the use of wireless links, the substitution network is very likely to have a limited capacity compared to the base network. Therefore a very careful deployment and management of the substitution network is required. Specifically, an accurate knowledge of the on-going traffic (and if possible of the future traffic) may be of some interest to adapt the topology of the substitution network and to tune the protocols.

Moreover, as the substitution network is deployed for a limited lifetime (corresponding to the time of the trouble of the base network), it is also important to be able to determine when the substitution network is not needed anymore. To this end, the design of a performance metric based on available measurements is required in order to bring an accurate and up-to-date view of the network's usage to the protocols running on the networks (base and substitution). The output of this metric will be strongly tighten to the developed protocols as the substitution should be able to react and to adapt efficiently to the knowledge sent by the metrology system.

Goal: This PhD. thesis should bring the gap between the metrology domain and the routing optimization field in the context of substitution networks. This PhD. thesis will handle the routing problem (and very likely the multipath routing) and the admission control problem assuming a knowledge regarding the nature of the flows. The two main points that will be addressed in this work are:
o Study methods to detect when a substitution network is needed and at which time it is no longer useful. The method is likely to involve some statistical tools to characterize the flow patterns and basic knowledge in queueing theory.
o Develop implementable strategies to share the available network resource between the competing flows according to their critical impact (control traffic goes first) and to their requirements in terms of delays, throughput, or losses. This implies the development of networking protocols to optimize the overall network performance based on a categorization of the existing flows.

Within the framework of the Swiss National Science Professorship project "Simple closed geodesics and the study of Teichmueller space",

two doctoral assistant positions are available.

The start date would be from September 1, 2010 or at the earliest convenience. Candidates must have masters degree or a diploma in mathematics. In addition to working towards the gaining a doctoral degree, the successful candidates will be expected to teach exercise courses, collaborate in seminars and other related tasks. The doctoral subject would be in the area of geometric topology, and in particular of Teichmueller spaces, Riemann surfaces and hyperbolic geometry.

Furthermore, it is preferable that the candidate be fluent in either French or German with a good understanding of the other language.

1.1 Présentation du sujet
La gestion des stocks est un élément très important pour les entreprises. Il faut pouvoir satisfaire les clients à moindre coût. Pour cela, il est nécessaire d’être en possession des composants nécessaires et suffisants, pour fabriquer les produits demandés et les livrer à la date voulue. En effet, une mauvaise politique d’approvisionnement, et de gestion des stock d’une manière générale, conduit soit à des retards de livraison, qui engendrent des frais, soit à des stocks inutiles. Ces derniers peuvent être créés à différents niveaux (des matières premières aux produits finis), coûtent de l’argent et immobilisent des fonds. C’est pourquoi, il faut chercher des méthodes de planification des approvisionnements efficaces
pour savoir exactement quoi commander, combien et quand. Nous nous intéresserons plus particulièrement aux systèmes de planification de type MRP. A l’origine, les techniques MRP sont prévues pour des conditions déterministes. Nous étudions de cas plus réalistes, lorsque les entreprises sont soumises aux incertitudes externes de la demande et des approvisionnements et nous cherchons les par paramètres les meilleurs possibles pour un système MRP.
1.2 Objectifs - Choisir des indicateurs de performance pour la chaîne d’approvisionnement en tenant compte des aléas de la demande et des délais de livraison - Etudier l’influence du choix de paramètres des systèmes MRP sur ces indicateurs - Développer des modèles pour le paramétrage optimal des systèmes MRP de chaque entreprise appartenant à la chaîne.
1.3 Originalité scientifique du projet Théoriquement, la production sous MRP est sans stock d'encours ou d'approvisionnement, mais le modèle de base est souvent utopique. En effet, si le besoin en composants par jour est faible, alors, pour des raisons économiques, on peut ne pas commander cette petite quantité, il faut acheter un lot plus grand, mais moins fréquemment. De plus que la demande de ce modèle idéal MRP est déterministe. Or, la demande réelle varie souvent de manière aléatoire. Enfin, des problèmes de production peuvent intervenir comme des pannes machines, des retards de transport, ou encore des problèmes de qualité qui perturbent les délais. Il faut donc savoir paramétrer le système MRP en choisissant de bonnes valeurs pour les temps de cycle planifiés et pour le nombre de période de regroupement, de sorte que les coûts totaux soient minimaux et que le niveau de service de clients soit le plus satisfaisant possible.
1.4 Méthode de recherche Recherche opérationnelle : analyse mathématique et simulation. Notre approche se base sur l’optimisation discrète (temps et état discrets) des modèles stochastiques.
1.5 Valorisation sous forme de publications
Nous ciblons les meilleures revues qui publient les résultats de ce type de recherche, à savoir : International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, Naval Research Logistics, European Journal of Operational Research (objectif : au moins 3 publications en revue)
1.6 Situation des objectifs du projet par rapport aux programmes et stratégie du centre/laboratoire La problématique de Supply chain management est très porteuse et d’actualité, elle est un sujet de collaboration entre différentes équipes du centre/laboratoire
2.1 Compétences de l’équipe d’accueil
Dans nos précédents travaux nous développé des méthodes basées sur les modèles de Markov et des processus stochastiques [5, 10], algorithmes par séparation et évaluation [6, 8, 9, 12], décomposition, recuit simulé [7] et algorithmes génétiques [11] pour résoudre ce type de problème dans de cas
particuliers. Ce travail de thèse se basera sur ces résultats pour les généraliser et les développer davantage.

Девять аспирантских позиций (ESR, early stage researchers) в пяти европейских университетах (EPFL, TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH и U Rennes I) финансируются Европейской Комиссией в рамках программы Marie Curie Initial Training Network (проект TransForm).

TransForm посвящен теоретическим основам транзакционной памяти (TM, transactional memory). TM - многообещающая парадигма для написания параллельных программ и, как следствие, эффективного использования многопроцессорных и многоядерных компьютеров. Цель проекта - заложить теоретический фундамент, необходимый для оценки эффективности существующих систем ТМ, разработки новых систем, и определения их потенциальных преимуществ и неизбежных недостатков.

Postdoctoral positions in applied mathematics and computational science. These full-time positions are available immediately. The successful candidates will pursue either analytical, numerical, or experimental work in the Applied Math Laboratory primarily on the dynamics of fluids with particular emphasis on shock waves. The position is for one year to begin in the Fall, 2010 with the possibility of extension for two more years.

Possible research topics include:

1. Numerical simulation of multi-dimensional shock/detonation waves

2. Asymptotic analysis of the dynamics of shock/detonation wave

3. Analysis of hyperbolic balance laws and self-sustained shock waves

4. Uncertainty analysis of reactive systems with application to detonation dynamics

5. Dynamics of free-surface flows, especially involving hydraulic jumps

6. Analysis of continuum models of traffic flow

7. Mathematical modeling of interacting systems in biology and social sciences

The position on the topic of Uncertainty Quantification is to be held jointly with Stanford University. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to use outstanding computational and experimental facilities at KAUST, including IBM Blue Gene/P System, a state-of-the-art experimental fluid mechanics laboratory, enjoy interactions/visits with scientists both on campus and outside at KAUST partner universities (Cambridge University and Oxford University in UK, Stanford University in USA) as well as with collaborators at MIT, University of Illinois, University of Alberta, and others.

Requirements. The applicant should hold a PhD in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, or related field, and have excellent understanding of fluid dynamics, partial differential equations, mathematical methods, and computational techniques. The PhD candidate should provide some algorithms and protocols to
manange the deployment of the substitution network. More specifically,
the wireless mobile routers must be deployed so that the performances
of the networks are maximized. This deployment should consider
topology issues such as hidden terminals or flow in the middle.
Moreover, constraints such as connectivity, performances, QoS and
energy consumption have to be considered. Evaluation of the proposed
algorithms/protocols will be performed by theoretical analysis,
simulations and real implementations.

Required skills:
The candidate must have:
- A MSc degree in computer science, or a related field is required.
- Knowledge in wireless networking.
- Good skills in programming are necessary.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Position opened at CEA Grenoble for the parallelization/porting on GPU of a nanoscale device simulation code.

A one year (*) position, starting around November 2010, is opened at CEA/INAC (Grenoble, France), to work on the parallelization and porting on GPU of a nanoscale device simulation code.

The atomistic simulation laboratory (L_Sim) of CEA/INAC has a leading position in the development of high-performance simulation codes for physics and chemistry, and shares for example the 2009 Bull-Fourier prize for the "BigDFT" project. It provides a challenging environment with an access to the main computational facilities in France (CCRT and CINES) and Europe.

The L_Sim is presently developing a code (TB_Sim) for the calculation of the electronic, optical and transport properties of nanoscale devices involving, for example, silicon nanowires and carbon nanotubes. This code is able to describe these devices at the atomic scale, allowing for original and accurate calculations. It has been used in the recent past to address various issues in nanostructures (see web pages below).

The calculation of the transport properties (current-voltage characteristics) of such nanodevices is among the most intensive class of problems this code can solve. It is based on a so-called "Non-equilibrium Green functions" approach, which amounts to the calculation of selected entries of the inverse of very large (dimension n > 500 000) but sparse matrices. Recent progress has been made in the solution of this problem with the introduction of a new "knitting" algorithm [1], which allowed for significant speed ups. The code is now able to perform state-of-the-art calculations on nanodevices, and already runs on large scale computational facilities such as CCRT or CINES.

At present, the code is parallelized at a very basic level (outer loops on voltages, ...). The aim of the present project would be to :

- work on the development of specific, high-performance linear algebra operations used by the code but not provided by standard linear algebra packages such as BLAS.

- work on the parallelization of the core knitting algorithm itself, to address problems of unprecedented size on massively parallel machines (>512 CPUs), and to propose grand challenges on these machines.

- work on the GPU implementation of this algorithm, to take advantage of the hybrid architectures available at CCRT.

The candidate should have some experience in large scale parallelization and/or programmation of GPUs, and send his/her CV to Yann-Michel Niquet (yniquet(-at-)cea.fr).

Within the framework of the Swiss National Science project "Simple closed geodesics and the study of Teichmueller space":

Doctoral Assistant positions

are available. The start date would be at the earliest convenience. Candidates must have a masters degree or a diploma in mathematics. In addition to working towards the obtention of a doctoral degree, the successful candidates will be expected to teach exercise courses (in French or German),
collaborate in seminars and other related tasks. The doctoral subject would be in the area of geometric topology, for instance on Teichmueller spaces, Riemann surfaces and hyperbolic geometry. The salary is competitive and starts at approximately 40'000 CHF per annum (gross income).

Application material should include a curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation and a letter of purpose explaining the candidate's academic background, achievements to date and research interests.
